I love the story, characters and the time period. It is a big book for this type of story but a perfect length. Never a dull moment. Great author and look forward to more from her. Highly recommended.
Jillian writes a complex and imaginative story filled with drama, family, romance, and love. This is a beautiful story, punctuated with some painful moments.
There are a few anachronisms and numerous spelling errors (pined should be pinned, caned should be canned...), but the plot and characters are so engaging that it's almost easy to overlook the editing issies.
When I think transgender I think of a person born one gender finding it more natural to present and live as another gender. This story is not that. This is the story of a young boy who is a boy and has no question about that, and his mother and aunt who long ago wanted the mother's youngest child to be born a girl and now that the opportunity has presented itself they are going to turn the boy into a girl.
This is a sad story. All the boy's problems as a child come from the lack of care from his family and the indifference of the adults around him. Only once he is forced to wear feminine clothes and act feminine, let alone begin unknowingly taking feminization hormones, does he start getting the love and affection from his mother he so desparately craves. It is only fear of losing this new love and sense of belonging that makes him choose not to fight back against this forcing even though he does not like it.
A wonderful book with a great ending...with closure...
This is one you will not voluntary put down, it is such a wonderful tale with all it's twists and turns and so many changes. It is just wonderful and I recommend that everyone read it. It has a happy ending.
The story was engaging but it was difficult to believe that any teen could be so unwordly. It made it difficult to empathize with Ruby becauecI kept wanting to hit her upside the head and tell her to get real. That's often the difficulty with a period piece.A decent plot and character development made it a decent read for the genre.
